First hiking buddy of the trip 🐶 She was with us the whole way up…and the whole way down 🥹

Volcan Fuego is an incredibly active volcano. This hike is so popular because you’re nearly guaranteed a spectacular lava display at night. Unfortunately for us, the clouds were too thick to see through. But we were treated to a morning eruption with smoke billowing high into the sky. That was enough for me, but still might have to return to catch evening show.

Antigua is surrounded by volcanoes making for both a beautiful landscape and tragic history. Less than three days into the trip I decided to go on one of the more popular overnight hikes to the summit of Acatenango. My thinking was, tackle the more strenuous activities while I was brimming with enthusiasm and energy. Good call. The hike is an exhausting, nonstop ascent to the summit. But also very straightforward and rewarding with some amazing views. That’s Volcan Fuego in the distance. Fingers crossed for an evening show 🌋

I had a lot of places to go and things to do planned for this trip. But one thing I was looking forward to the most was having the time to just sit & read. I’ve always struggled to find time for it, but the next few months would afford me countless hours of downtime…and I was happy to trade working hours for reading hours. First up on the list was Jungle of Stone. This is now one of my favorite books ever. If you’re headed to Guatemala, want to learn about Mayan civilization or love a good adventure, I highly recommend this book. Warning: May Cause Wanderlust

The first day in a new city is always exciting. But first day in a new city at the start of a new trip is something special. Especially a trip like this. Especially a place like this. Antigua is simply beautiful. While obviously touristy and a bit commercial, the old capital of Guatemala retains much of its classic charm. Stone streets lined with Spanish colonial buildings, some still showing scars of earthquakes passed. Tiled rooftops create a red clay mosaic pitched across green mountains, blue skies and rolling white clouds. All surrounded by volcanoes both near and far. I spent the next few weeks wandering every street and corner I could manage, with a couple of mini excursions mixed in.
